Department: Medical Department - Ophthalmology
Reports to: Chief of Ophthalmology.
Responsible for: Physician in his clinic of services
Liaises with: Nursing, Clinical and Technical staff
Job Summary: The Ophthalmic Consultant shall carry out all appropriate medical/ophthalmic responsibilities in his area of specialization or of general responsibility.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1 Accountability to the Chief of Ophthalmology for all his professional and medical staff administrative activities.
2 Continuing surveillance of the professional performance of medical staff members who exercise privileges within his Ophthalmic Unit, with the rendering of regular reports on each member, at least at the time of employment, contract renewal or reappointment.
3 Recommending to the Chief of Ophthalmology, the criteria for the granting of privileges in his/her Ophthalmic Unit.
4 Assuring that a regular review and evaluation of the quality and appropriateness of patient care rendered within his/her Ophthalmic Unit is carried out through designated mechanisms.
5 Assuring the participation of his/her Ophthalmic Unit members in continuing education programs and required meetings.
6 Participating in his/her Ophthalmic Unit planning (i.e. budget, physician staff) and assisting in preparation of all required reports.
7 Assures appropriate quality assurance standards for the practice of medical care and the carrying on of clinical research in the hospital and clinics in conjunction with appropriate administrative personnel and other members of the medical staff.
8 Shall monitor compliance with the Bylaws, Rules and Regulations of the Medical Staff, which defines areas of responsibilities.
9 Assists the Medical Director and Hospital Administrator in determining medical equipment and program needs.
10 Coordinates vacations, sick leave and other emergencies to maintain a viable clinical service function at all times.
11 Practice medicine in accordance with qualifications.
