1. Basic Function:
Performs skilled pipefitting duties, to install, maintain and repair a wide variety of pipes and pipelines. Includes laying supported, overhead and buried lines and associated flanges, joints, valves and other pipe pieces. Also installs tubes in heat exchangers, vessels, towers etc.
2. Work Performed:
a) Receives verbal instructions, sketches and isometric drawings from supervisor, for the installation or repair of piping. Assesses/plans jobs, determines necessary tools and materials and obtains from stores or requests from supervisor. Carries out work on-site or in shop.
b) Installs pipes as required, following required routing. Lays pipes on sleepers, overhead supports or in trenches, installs T-joints, elbows, flanges etc. Cooperates with welders over welding joints, checks alignment and levels, pressure tests and ensures completed work conforms to instructions.
c) Uses oxygen/acetylene equipment to cut various pipes to required sizes, includes connecting regulator, torch, and gas cylinder, and adjusting pressure to necessary levels.
d) Carries out fitting of pipes in field or workshop by following sketches or drawings, marks or makes free hand layouts on pipes, cutting to specifications and preparing/beveling pipes for welding. Also removes and reinstalls a variety of valves on-site.
e) Installs tubes, in specified layouts, in bundles, circles or box formations, in heat exchangers, vessels, towers, tanks and boilers.
f) Carries out other similar or related duties, such as cleaning up jobsite, following all safety rules and salvaging and returning materials and tools to stores after work is completed.
